A sad irony of the Joker is that it’s only after his descent into madness that Arthur appears happy and confident
But of course turning on the world isn’t the only way to feel mentally strong, and that’s why in this video I want to use Arthur’s story to talk about 5 habits that kill your mental fortitude & confidence and what you can do instead to build mental toughness.

0:40 - #1: Arthur often engages in fantasy.
1:57 - #2: Arthur lacks self efficacy.
4:23 - #3: Arthur has no outlet where he can honestly express his emotions.
5:46 - #4: Arthur inadvertently disowns aspects of himself.
7:04 - #5: Everything we have discussed results in Arthur’s total hatred of the world.

  • what makes me sad about hits this is the third one he has no place to express himself there are times I have looked for professional help and it was a dismal failure For example one day I used the expression 'if you lay down with dogs you are going to get fleas' I just used it as a general statement to say I need to watch out who I associate with counselor jumped in with 'or doggie kisses because of your experiences you see flea I see doggie kisses" wow really dude someone I knew growing up lured a guy to a secluded spot and killed him so no I will stay with hmm maybe I shouldn't associate with these people

  • Just as a note, you can view things from someone else's perspective and still see that they're acting selfishly. Arthur's coworker lied about the gun to save his own job, but still did so at Arthur's expense. Just because you're called to empathize with why someone's doing doesn't mean you necessarily have to respect that reason. You don't have to conclude that when a mugger is stealing your money and threatening your life that it's because they're just trying to survive and that it's ok. What they're doing is still very much not ok.

  • I definitely relate to the point about Arthur not being able to feel he can take steps to changing his life and is always waiting for something big to happen in order feel he can move forward. For me, I feel so jaded and hate myself because of my constant mistakes caused due to behaviours or lack of awareness because of my disability. I'm so full of habits that really die hard and feel there is no point in trying to change because nothing good will ever come my way if I do. People will always use your past against you whenever they notice the slightest bit of change i.e. in behaviour or lifestyle. After the life I've had whenever I get to any success point I immediately feel I don't deserve to be in that position because I knew what it is was like when I first began, and I hate it when people notice it. I've never had a girlfriend in my 27 years on this earth and feel I may as well flush all hope of it happening down the toilet. Late 30s/early 40s is really late to have the first ever romantic relationship in your life. I guess it would always be tough for me because I feel I have to do everything another way or the most difficult way.

  • 5:06 I can't seem to find a healthy outlet for myself like i play the drums but I cannot seem to play well with a metronome or clicker so when it comes time to perform i often freak out which make me feel incompetent and adds more to the stress I was trying to alleviate. Then comes in the Visualization vs fantasizing part, when it comes to the work, I just don't enjoy it so I feel stuck like crazy

    OhsosaucyOhsosaucy3 måneder siden
    • You'll never learn to play well without a metronome unless you first learn to play badly without a metronome. I'm not good at playing the piano, and it's a different instrument anyway, but one thing my tutor taught me was that you use a metronome not to learn to play a piece, but to perfect playing the piece. It's a polishing tool, not a crutch. Don't know if that applies to the drums, though.

  • The reason why I like Batman is that he is completely opposite of the Joker. Everything you said here is the opposite of what Batman is. Arthur often engages in fantasy. -- Batman often engages in visualization and planning. Arthur lacks self efficacy. -- Batman makes the most of his situation and resources, to the point that he can stand toe to toe and shoulder to shoulder with superhumans. Arthur has no outlet where he can honestly express his emotions. -- Batman has Alfred. Arthur inadvertently disowns aspects of himself. -- Batman embraces everything, even his fears, to turn them into something positive, at least for the benefit of others. Everything we have discussed results in Arthur’s total hatred of the world. -- Batman feels indebted to Gotham, even to the point of sacrificing himself. That's love.

  • As someone who had a big issue with fantasies growing up I completely understand this. If I had kept living in my head I would have probably end up like the joker tbh. Even with girls. I went from literally trying to kiss a girl at a random time without even setting the mood or asking her on a date because I had all this fairy tale love at first sight bs in my head to now basically getting any girl I want. So there's hope for you guys. Don't lose that hope and try to be better

  • I was recently talking about my upbringing and there is something similar that I wanted to share. My reason for fantasizing was due to the fact that I was raised quite in the same way as Arthur's mom; I was classified as someone who cannot do anything because I am just simply me. But I realize that it was because during my school years I was surrounded by elitist teachers and classmates who were the children of very known people. My classmates were bullies and every time I had to defend myself it was a problem, not just with them but with opportunistic teachers with a false friendship with them. Because of it, I created a need to fantasize and create my escapes; it got so big that I ended having the same issues as Arthur. (obviously not that extreme but certain aspects were very similar). Of all the videos of your channel that I saw, I think this one touches me deeply because during this time I happen to see more in-depth of my failures and looking for details to overcome my flaws. I think this one is the most important one I have ever encountered. Thank you for making this video.

  • I can confirm fantasizing can become an obssesive habit and chips away at your self-esteem, motivation and mental health in general. You become deeply unhappy with your life.

  • This was a very useful video, thank you so much! It taught me the difference between visualization and fantasy :) Now I understand why some projects did work and others didn't. It truly is necessary to mentally prepare for hard times, grinds or challenges, because they will appear at some point. Accepting the fact that you might have to overcome certain obstacles before they appear changes the positioning and perspective towards these events which gives you a stronger position once they come in. It seems to have the effect of bracing yourself for the impact.

    DaliDali4 måneder siden
  • there's a vast oversimplification of the concept of shadow here... the whole point of your shadow is you don't know what's in it. if you aren't even aware of something, how can you express it consciously? as long as you are unaware, it will always express itself through your unconscious actions. really extreme / violent actions, stemming from your shadow, would only occur due to extreme situations. in the right situation, it will occur 100% of the time... unless you are aware of that side of yourself, and thus able to negotiate with it, not only having the ability to control it, but utilize it's power productively.
